Tips on how to measure stairs

First, you should measure each stair individually. Look at the width and length of the step. The width is self explanatory, whilst the length of the step is a bit trickier. Including both riser along with the tread. The riser will be the vertical part even though the tread may be the horizontal piece that you just put your foot on when you walk up the stairs.

When you have totalled the size of carpeting that you need, add approximately five centimetres (or 2 ") towards the total. This gives you adequate room to take into account any bulges and other variances when the time comes to fit the rug.
